A Complicated Steps Towards Simplicity

Simin Behbahni’s defiant alterations of ghazal’s structure and content which has insured place in Persian literary history. Her iconoclastic poetic descriptions of feminine passions and emotions are also another manifestation of her innate courage. Perhaps to a lesser degree, both Parvin E’tesami and Forough Farrokhzad had displayed the same audacity in their poetic imageries. Her contributions to a new form of ghazal include: the use of new metres adopted from vernacular language; focusing on themes and concepts that had been previously considered inappropriate for this form of poetry; creating imagery hitherto alien to ghazal. Indeed, Simin’s innovations in this regard has created a poetic genre not unlike the sonnets of contemporary British poets.
